History

SustainableQatar is an independent, volunteer-based organization of committed individuals to promote environmental awareness within the Qatar community. SustainableQatar started off in March 2008 by  Rosemary Lapka (formerly with Carnegie Mellon University), Mike Johnston (formerly with American School of Doha), Adam Dodge (formerly with American School of Doha) and Jay Trimiar (Qatar University), as a group of environmental and social educators getting together to share interests and to start a dialogue.

The SustainableQatar executive board continued to provide inspiration and dedication in establishing SustainableQatar as a valuable resource for Qatar, its citizens and residents. We thank Dr. Mari Luomi, Gudrun Vogenreiter, Agnes Astolfi and Dr. Peter Bowman for their dedication and guidance in those formative years.

Today, under the leadership of president Katrin Scholz-Barth together with SustainableQatar‘s executive board, our vision is to be a resource that empowers the community to environmental action by fostering awareness, skills and knowledge.

We like to expand our group beyond educators and invite businesses, citizens, community organizations, non-profits, NGOs, and representatives from the Qatari government and Qatari community to join us. Together, we can take the steps towards creating a Sustainable Qatar.

SustainableQatar has been featured, too, in Qatar Today’s December 2009 issue…check it out!
