Sustainable Initiatives in Qatar

The Qatar Natural History Group (QNHG) was founded more than 40 years ago to ‘bring together people with an interest in the natural history of Qatar and the Gulf’. Meetings take place between October and June, usually on the first Wednesday of the month and there are field trips or rambles at least twice a month.

Wa’hab aims to reduce food wastage in Qatar by connecting those with surplus food to those who are in need of food. They aim to partner with food outlets and charities to collect the excess food, package it and deliver them to beneficiaries.  This results in optimal usage of food, thus saving the economy a loss in capital. In addition, it reduces wastage at landfills and thus creates a safer environment because of reduced carbon footprint.

Kahramaa Awareness Park with National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) and Electric Car Changing Station run by Kahramaa is an exciting and fun place where you can learn all about the importance of energy and the best ways to you can help to conserve it.

The Qatar e-Nature initiative is a bi-lingual interactive smartphone application, the first of its kind that highlights the rich diversity of Qatar’s environment. This initiative aims to support the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 to promote sustainable development by contributing towards an environmentally aware population. It contains detailed information and pictures of hundreds of plants, birds and bird’s sounds, insects, mammals, reptiles, marine life as well as nature reserves in Qatar. It is available to download free of charge on the App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store.

The mission of the Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP) is to restore the natural beauty of the beaches and sand dunes, to help promote the beautiful landscapes that Qatar has to offer, as well as to raise awareness on the importance of preserving the environment. This group of over 2000 volunteers from all over the world undertakes beach clean-ups all over Qatar.
